To color synthetic sapphire, pigments must be introduced during crystal formation. This is more of an art than a science, and materials created with speckled or imprecise colors must be rejected. Once a fair color is achieved, the final sapphire crystal has to be painstakingly worked (with a high failure rate, meaning a lot of chips will break), and then hours of hand polishing. On the wrist, the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron differs in form from most other watches. It looks a bit like a reverse bull’s head because the crown points down instead of up. The largest scale case is 44.4mm wide, 57.8mm long and 21.5mm thick. The shape of the watch is roughly in the form of a car, but it also has elements of a dashboard gauge (but not a car theme). I also feel that the slightly aerodynamic look of the case combined with the crown that looks like a rocket engine gives the Bugatti Chiron a unique spaceship vibe. Most of the non-sapphire crystal parts of the case (water-resistant to 30 meters) are made of polished titanium, which nicely frames the movement with the suspension inside the case. The idea is that the shock absorbers help reduce vibrations flowing to the mechanical motion, which will reduce rate consistency and therefore accuracy. The specially designed movement inside the Bugatti Chiron is the Jacob & Co. caliber JCAM37, which is manually wound and consists of 578 parts. The movement features a slightly inclined 60-second tourbillon (located on the case at 12 o’clock) for the time, and also features a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock. The movement is also whimsically animated, featuring a W16 array of sapphire crystal and metal "engine blocks" with actual working piston shafts. The latter animation doesn’t run all the time, but when one of the lower pushers is activated, the W16 engine kicks in as needed and all 16 piston heads move up and down as in an internal combustion engine. The JCAM37 hand-wound movement operates at 3 Hz (21,600 vph) and has a power reserve of 60 hours.
